Master The Art of Hitting Those Small Goals

Master The Art of Hitting Those Small Goals

Recently, in a writing program I’ve been doing, the host told us to set our writing goals so small that they’re almost ridiculous.

I’m talking wake up and write for 10 minutes.

Of course, 10 minutes itself isn’t going to turn into a novel or essay on it’s own, but it’s about getting into the habit of showing up everyday for yourself.

If you can’t trust and rely on yourself to turn up for the tiny goals, what makes you think you’ll turn up for those big goals?

It’s about building a routine with yourself, where you commit to turning up even when it’s hard.

10 minutes turns into 20 minutes turns into 1 hour, and so it goes…

If you’re struggling to get a walk in each day, then your goal needs to be as small as putting on your shoes and leaving the house…every single day. Once you’re out the door, getting your walk in suddenly becomes a lot easier.

We often get caught up with setting these lofty goals for ourselves (and heck I still fall back in this habit sometimes), without building a sustainable framework that will actually enable us to achieve them.

So this is my goal for you…

Think of that thing that’s been on your New Year’s Resolutions every year, that you’re still hoping to achieve after years.

You got it?

Now think about the smallest possible daily goal you can set, that will take you one step closer to that goal.

Want to write a book? Every morning, you need to sit down and write something for 5 minutes. If you don’t know what to write, write about that.

Want to hit your daily step goal? Get those shoes on and step outside your front door, every single day.

Want to learn guitar? You need to physically pick up the guitar everyday, it doesn’t matter if you play it after that.

Are you laughing at how small this goal seems?

Good, you’re doing it right.

Now, go and write this goal down somewhere really obvious where you’ll see it, every single day.

Once you master the art of showing up consistently for your small goals, it’ll make it so much easier for you to scale your goal up. Because, now you’re accountable to yourself and have proven that you can consistently show up even when you don’t feel like it.

So give it a shot, there’s nothing to lose!

Until next time,

Kate
